DM Companion · Updated 1 November 2026

DM Companion is a toolkit for running tabletop role-playing games, made by Ambient Multimedia ("we"). This policy explains what the app, its server and its website handle. In short: your campaigns stay on your device. Besides questions you choose to send to the AI Assistant, the app only checks for app updates and new weekly content, without sending anything about you or your games.

Stored on your device

Campaigns, characters, roll history, presets, settings, initiative, conditions and battle maps are stored only on your device. They aren't uploaded or backed up by us. Deleting the app deletes them, so use Export backup in the app to keep a copy. A backup file goes only where you choose to save or share it. Like other app data, they're included in your iPhone's own iCloud or computer backups.

The AI Assistant (optional)

The Assistant is off until you allow AI sharing in the app. After that, each question you send, with a limited amount of the conversation before it, goes through the DM Companion server to Anthropic, which makes the Claude AI models, to generate an answer. The server doesn't store your questions or the answers. Anthropic processes them under its commercial privacy terms: it doesn't use API data to train its models, and deletes it within 30 days, except where it must keep it longer to enforce its usage policy or comply with the law. Don't include sensitive personal information in questions. You can turn AI sharing off at any time in the app.

Updates and weekly content

When it opens, the app checks for updates through Expo's EAS Update service, which delivers fixes and new features without a trip to the App Store. That request includes a random ID that Expo's update software creates for this install, the app version and the platform (iOS), so Expo can send the right update. It doesn't include your campaigns or anything you type. Expo handles it under its privacy policy.

The app also asks the DM Companion server for this week's content drop when it opens or comes back to the screen, at most once an hour. That request carries no ID. Your IP address is visible to the server, as with any connection, and isn't stored.

What the server keeps

Per-day counts are deleted after 2 days, and monthly counts and the App Attest key's statistics after 13 months.

Your IP address is used briefly in memory to limit request bursts and isn't stored. Standard request logs record the time, path and status of each request, not its content.

Waitlist

If you ask to join the DM Companion waitlist by email, we receive your email address. We use it only to send the beta or launch link, and delete the list after launch. Ask us at any time to be removed.

Who processes data

Anthropic (AI answers), our hosting provider (runs the server), Expo (app updates) and Apple (App Attest and TestFlight). These providers are in the United States, so your data may be processed there.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, UK or California), you can ask to access, correct or delete your data, or object to how we use it. We use the install ID and counts to provide the free allowance you ask for, and share questions with the AI only with your consent, which you can withdraw in the app. Contact us to use these rights. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

What we don't do

No accounts, advertising, analytics, tracking across apps or websites, or sale of data. The app doesn't use the microphone, camera, location, contacts or photo library.

TestFlight

If you test a beta through TestFlight, Apple shares crash reports and any feedback you send with the developer, under Apple's TestFlight terms. Your email address is shared only if you were invited by email.

Children

DM Companion isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information.

Deleting your data

In the app, More → About → Erase all data deletes everything on this device and asks the server to delete the counts and App Attest key for your install ID. Deleting the app removes the data on your device but leaves the server's counts, which are tied only to the random install ID, until they expire as described above. You can also contact us to have them removed.
